Dawet Ayu is the 1st Winner of the 2020 Indonesian Enchantment Award, this is the origin
The Origin of Dawet Ayu
Es dawet is popular among the people of Central Java, while the people of West Java or Sunda refer to it as es cendol. These two ices do have the same look and taste.
Es cendol itself is said to have come from the word jendol which in Sundanese means jendolan. This refers to the texture of cendol grains which are irregular in shape. But in Central Java, the name of this drink is not es cendol but es dawet.
The most popular ice dawet is ice dawet ayu which comes from Banjarnegara. It is said that reportedly, there are various stories behind the history of the name es dawet ayu.
Comes from the lyrics of the song
The lyrics of the song titled Dawet Ayu Banjarnegara, which was created by a Banjarnegara artist named Bono, is said to be the historical origin of the name Dawet Ayu. The song popularized by the Calung Art Group and the Banyumas Comedy Peang-Penjol was popular in the 1980s.
In the lyrics of this song, the word ‘dawet Banjarnegara’ is mentioned several times. This song is about a simple conversation between a brother and sister about planning to go on a picnic.
Here it is written, wherever you want to go on a picnic, the important thing is don’t forget to buy fresh, cold and sweet banjarnegara dawet
Comes from a beautiful dawet seller
Another version of the origin of the name es dawet ayu is also widely heard among the people of Banjarnegara. Reportedly, there is a family selling dawet ice that has been selling it since the 20th century.
The third generation of this dawet ice seller is famous for his beautiful face. From here, people began to call it es dawet ayu, which means ice dawet, a mixture of beautiful women.
Philosophy of Semar and Gareng
It’s not only the name that’s interesting, but also the presence of Semar and Gareng on the dawet ayu ice seller cart. It is said that the figures of Semar and Gareng are symbols of hope for the dry season or mareng.
When the dry season arrives, the seller of dawet ayu ice will harvest because many buyers eat dawet ayu ice. Regardless of the origin of the name and the philosophy of es dawet ayu, this drink turns out to be liked by many people and no less exists with contemporary drinks.
