Built during the rule of the Sailendra Dynasty (c. 650-1025 CE), Borobudur remains the world’s largest Buddhist temple. According to the Karangtengah epigraph, Borobudur Temple was built by King Samaratungga of the Syailendra Dynasty, but was only completed during the reign of his daughter, Queen Pramudawardhani, around the 9th century. The temple has remained strong even through ten centuries of neglect. It was rediscovered in 1815, buried under volcanic ash. In the 1970’s the Indonesian Government and UNESCO worked together to restore Borobudur to its former majesty, the restoration took eight years to complete and today Borobudur is one of Indonesia and the world’s most valuable treasures.Little was known about other things, including who the architect that designed the building—which was constructed of 2 million (55,000 m3) interlocking andesite slabs arranged like a giant puzzle. According to the Shivagrha inscription of 856 CE, the temple was built to honor Lord Shiva, and its original name was Shiva-grha (the House of Shiva) or Shiva-laya (the Realm of Shiva). According to the Shivagrha inscription, a public water project to change the course of a river near Shivagrha temple was undertaken during the construction of the temple. The river, identified as the Opak River, now runs north to south on the western side of the Prambanan temple compound. The sulfur crater lake lies between a natural dam of deeply etched rock. It is 200 meters deep and contains about 36 million cubic meters of steaming acid water, shrouded in a smelling swirling sulfur cloud. Inside the crater the different color and size of stones are found. Indeed, the crater of Ijen is beautiful garden of stone as well. The view of sulfur miners who climb and go down to the crater is also amazing. A man puts about 10 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket, before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. It is the natural picture that can be seen everyday. Ijen plateau or known as ‘Kawah Ijen‘ is highly recommended to mountain buffs and hikers. The Plateau was at one time a huge active crater, 134 sq km in area. Ijen is a quiet but active volcano, and the landscape is dominated by the volcanic cones of Ijen (2,368 asl) and Merapi (2,800 asl) on the northeastern edge of the Plateau, and Raung (3,332 asl) on the southwest corner.
