East Sumba Tour Package
The city with the largest population in East Sumba is Waingapu. Not far from here is the highest peak in Sumba, Mount Wanggameti, which stands at 1,225 meters above sea level. This area is now designated as the Laiwangi-Wanggameti National Park, known for its dense forests and diverse ecosystems.
Opened in 1998, this national park offers a wide variety of flora and fauna. You can find jungle fruits like guava, pulai, banyan trees, canarium, and cinnamon, as well as fauna such as long-tailed macaques, wild boars, monitor lizards, Timor pythons, and wild chickens. Local bird species like Walik Rawamanu and Punai Sumba can also be spotted here. Don’t be surprised to see many butterflies around—our sources say that Sumba is rich in butterfly species, with at least 43 species, 3 of which are endemic to the Nusa Tenggara archipelago.
Don’t worry about finding accommodation during your East Sumba Tour. Many locals have established homestays, which they manage themselves. The best time to visit Sumba is from March to June, as well as from October to December. Aside from enjoying the stunning natural beauty of East Sumba, you’ll also get a glimpse into its ancient history. There are several ancient burial sites and megalithic structures with unique motifs, such as horses, buffaloes, and human figures.
The history of Sumba Island dates back to 1522 when the Majapahit Kingdom conquered it. Later, the island became part of the Dutch East Indies in 1866 and eventually became a part of the Republic of Indonesia. Some Sumba people still practice Merapu (animism), while others follow Christianity (Protestantism and Catholicism). Muslims can also be found in the coastal areas of Sumba. Racially, the people are a mix of Mongoloid and Malenosoid descent.
